Get your apps and devices working in Windows 8.1

Most apps and devices created for earlier versions of Windows will work on Windows 8.1. However, if you run into compatibility problems with an app or device, there are several things you can try.

Look for solutions in Action Center

The Action Center in Windows 8.1 can alert you to variety of problems, from updates or drivers you need to install, to settings that need changing.
  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then clickSearch.)
  2. Enter action center in the search box, and then tap or click Action Center.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Check the Window Compatibility Center

Go online to the Compatibility Center for Windows 8.1 to find out if your device or app is compatible with Windows 8.1.

Noise from computer

Noise from computer

Noise from computer
Below is a listing of components within the computer that may cause unusual noises to be generated. To determine what components are causing your issue, verify that lights on your hardware devices, such as the CD-ROM drive, are not on when the noise is being made. If you are only encountering excessive noise when a device is accessed, it is likely that device is causing your issue

If the noise you are experiencing is occurring the entire time the computer is on, it could be any of the below devices. Distinguish what device is causing the noise by reading through each of the below sections

CD-ROM, DVD, or other disc drive

CD-ROM and other disc drives may generate noises when the drive is accessed. This noise should be a soft whirling noise when the CD-ROM drive is accessed. This noise should only be generated when the CD-ROM is accessed
It is abnormal for a CD-ROM to experience any of the below symptoms
  • No noise
  • Clicking during accessing the CD-ROM
  • Noises when the CD-ROM is not being accessed or no disc in the drive
If you are exhibiting any of the above issues it is likely that the CD-ROM drive is defective and it is recommended that it be replaced

Fan

There are several fans in computers that help provide ventilation to the computer's components. Below is a listing of the fans that may be causing noises in your computer
Case Fans
Case fans are fans commonly attached to the front or back of a computer. It is normal for most additional case fans to generate additional noise (usually a low hum). However, you should not expect to hear any clicking noise or high pitched noise from any of the case fans. When this occurs it is a good indication that the fan is failing or has already failed
CPU fan)heat sink)
Although not installed on all computers, some computer heat sinks may also contain a fan to help with keeping the processor cool. It is also not uncommon for a fan to go from quiet to loud while you're working on the laptop. Most computers and laptops will adjust the fan speeds when the processor is working more or computer is getting to hot
You should only expect to hear a slight hum from the CPU fan; below are some issues that may cause additional noise from your CPU fan
- Cable is hitting the fan causing a vibration
- CPU fan is loose causing vibration
- CPU fan is bad causing additional noise

Power supply fan

Floppy drive

Hard drive

The computer hard drive is a common issue for additional noise. It is normal for a hard drive to produce noise. Normal noises you should expect to hear include a low humming or quiet whistling sound
Noises you should not expect to hear are repetitive clicking, very noticeable humming, or any hard thump. If any of these noises are experienced it is recommend that the hard drive be looked at or replaced as it may be going bad
Note: You will notice an increased volume in sound from a SCSI hard drive when it is compared to a standard IDE/EIDE hard drive

Modem

Dial-up Modem MP3 audio file
When connecting to the Internet or another computer you may hear a loud screechy or high pitched noise. This noise is the onboard modem speaker and is the two computers connecting to each other. This noise should only be heard when the computer is establishing a connection with the other computer. Click the icon to the right to hear what this may sound like

Power supply

The power supply can cause an excessive amount of noise. This component provides your computer power as well as ventilation to the computer. If the fan within the power supply becomes bad or dirty it can cause an excessive amount of noise
If an excessive amount of noise is coming from the fan next to where you plug your computer power cable into, it is likely that the power supply fan is failing or bad. We recommend that you first clean the fan by using compressed air to blow out any dust, dirt, or hair. If this does not resolve your issue the power supply needs to be replaced

Basic software troubleshooting

Basic software troubleshooting
Unable to install a software program
Verify the diskettes or CD are readable by reading the files on the drive. For example, Microsoft Windows users can explore the drive in Windows explorer. If the CD attempts to AutoPlay, you may need to right-click the drive and click Explore to browse the drive. If you are having problems with reading a CD, see document CH000212.
If the CD reads fine with no errors, verify your computer meets the minimum requirements of the software program. If your computer does not have enough disk drive space or does not meet the requirements, the program will not install.
Make sure the program or utility you are installing is compatible with the version of operating system you have on your computer. For example, many older utilities such as a virus protection program may only work with a specific version of Microsoft Windows.
If you are getting stopped at the CD-KEY or Serial Number verification, verify you are entering your correct number. If you lost your number or key or it does not work, you need to contact the developer of the program. Computer Hope will not provide any users with an alternate identification number
                 Error during installation
Verify your computer meets the requirements of the program or utility. For example, if your computer runs out of disk space during the installation, this would cause an error during the installation
If you are running Microsoft Windows 95 or higher try installing the program from Safe Mode
Verify the CD is clean and contains no significant scratches. Information about how to clean a CD and a CD-ROM can be found on our cleaning page
Program or utility does not load or has an error when it attempts to load
Verify the program or utility documentation makes no mention of the error you are experiencing. Many times the error and explanation to how to resolve the error are already documented
Verify no patches or updates are available from the developer of the program or utility. In some cases the software program may require an update before it can be successfully run on your computer
Make sure all other programs are closed when you run the program or utility. If the program successfully runs after closing all other programs, it's possible that the program may have issues with other programs
Make sure the computer has been rebooted at least once after the program has been installed. In some cases it may be required
Verify your computer has the correct date. In some cases a program may rely on the date and if that date is incorrectly set it may cause issues. Additional information about setting the date can be found on document CH000554
If following the above recommendations does not resolve your issues, reinstall the program or utility

  5. If no conflicts or other devices are listed and your sound card is listed with no conflicts, skip to the next section.
Conflicts section
If conflicts exists with your sound card or other devices installed in your computer, it is likely that either the drivers are not properly installed for that device or the sound card or other devices are conflicting. If you open the properties of the device that is conflicting and view the properties, additional details about the conflict can be found. Additional information about error codes, as well as help with Device Manager, can be found on our Device Manager section.
If you are unable to locate additional information about your issue or are unable to resolve the issue, follow the steps below.
  1. Under "Sound, video and game controllers", highlight each device and press the delete key to remove the device.
  2. Reboot the computer.
  3. As the computer is booting, the system will detect the sound card and any of its devices and re-install those devices. If prompted for a location of drivers, try pointing it to your sound card CD or your Windows CD. If this does not work or is unable to locate the proper files, you need to get the latest sound drivers from your sound card manufacturer.
Other devices section
If Other devices are listed, these could be the sound card or another conflicting device. If any other devices are listed, it is recommended you remove those devices, reboot the computer and let Windows re-detect the devices.
If this does not work, determine what device is not being detected and resolve that issue first.
Missing sound card section.
If you are missing the "Sound, video and game controllers" category in Device Manager, it is likely that the sound card drivers are not installed properly, sound card has been disabled, sound card is bad, or no sound card is available in the computer. First, verify no conflicts or other devices are present in the Device Manager. If these are present, it is likely they are the sound card or devices causing the sound card not to be detected. Second, verify that the computer has a sound card and that the sound card is enabled on the computer.
If this is an on-board sound card, you can verify that it is enabled in the CMOS setup.
If you have no adapters or cannot click the down arrow to select the correct adapter, close out of this window. In the Control Panel, double-click the System icon, click theDevice Manager tab within Device Manager, and ensure there are no yellow ! or red X.
If you have either of these on any of your sound devices, remove everything under "Sound, video and game controllers" and reboot the computer. If after rebooting the computer you still have the same conflicts, double-click on the conflicting device and refer to our Device Manager error code section for additional information on the error code you are experiencing.

Verify speaker connections

Verify the speaker settings and speakers are not at fault by running through computer speaker troubleshooting.

Sound card drivers

If you have followed the above recommendations and you are still unable to get the sound card to work, in the Device Manager, remove all sound, video, and game controllers and reboot the computer. This should cause Windows to reinstall all missing drivers and often can correct corrupt drivers. If this does not work after rebooting the computer, download and install the latest sound card drivers from the computer or sound card manufacturer. A listing of manufacturer web pages for sound card drivers can be found on our sound card driver page.

Defective hardware

Finally, if all of the above recommendations do not resolve your issue, it is likely that either the sound card is not working and defective or that the operating system is corrupted. We recommend you contact the manufacturer of the sound card or computer for a replacement or additional recommendations.
